There’s a reason dogs have been used as security systems for as long as humans have lived in communities.
Our canine friends are trusting to a fault, loyal without exception and fierce defenders. This is something Deputy Todd Frazier of the Long Beach, Mississippi Police Department knows only too well, having experienced a run-in with thugs that almost cost him his life.
Well, it was a regular day on the job for Deputy Todd Frazier, a sheriff’s deputy in Hancock County, Mississippi, until he found himself in a life-threatening situation. Responding to a call about a lone man sitting in his car at a rest stop, Frazier approached the vehicle to make a welfare check, only to be ambushed by two other men.
Suddenly, Frazier found himself outnumbered three to one and being dragged into the woods. The attackers had a box cutter and were intent on killing him. Frazier fought back as best he could, but he knew he was no match for the gang.
“I had three people on me, and I’m not a very big man, and they basically whipped my butt,” Frazier later recalled.
In a desperate move, Frazier managed to free his hand and press a button on his belt, releasing his K-9 partner, Lucas, from his cruiser. The black Belgian Malinois breed dog charged at the attackers with fierce determination, attacking all three of them and driving them away.
“I had a button on my belt that I wear, and when I hit the button, Lucas jumped out of the car and attacked all three of them, and they ran away,” Frazier said.
Lucas had saved Frazier’s life, and the deputy knew it. “That’s why he’s my hero,” he said.
Frazier suffered serious injuries in the attack, but he eventually recovered and returned to his job. The three attackers were eventually caught and brought to justice, thanks in large part to the bravery of Lucas.
This incident is a true testament to the usefulness and bravery of police dogs like Lucas. They are trained to protect and serve, and they will go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that justice is served.
Frazier’s story is a miraculous one of survival against all odds. He was just moments away from death when he pressed that button on his belt, but his quick thinking and Lucas’ bravery saved the day.
