“The Marvels” did not disappoint on its first weekend.
It did, after all. The film’s reviews were continuously negative, and I’m sure Disney and the film’s producers expected it to sell a lot more tickets than it did.
However, estimates for the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe chapter have been slowly declining in recent weeks, and the box office has been dismal thus far. So, from that standpoint, the film has not disappointed; it has fared as poorly as predicted, if not worse.
According to Deadline, in only three weeks, expectations had dropped from $75 to $80 million to $50 to $60 million, depending on whose prognosticator you trusted.
That’s around a 20% decline in the best-case scenario and nearly twice that in the worst-case scenario. In any case, things were not looking good for Disney, which controls the Marvel property.
CNBC was a little more bullish, estimating a $60-$65 million opening weekend as late as Thursday – still not enough to make the box office.
According to an updated Deadline estimate on Saturday morning, the weekend’s haul was in the $47 to $52 million area.
With Friday’s statistics rolling in at a dismal $21.5 million, it appeared to be Marvel’s worst opening weekend ever.
“The only films that have opened lower than $60 million have been 2015′s ‘Ant-Man,’ which debuted with $57 million, and 2008′s ‘Incredible Hulk,’ which opened with $55 million,” CNBC reported.
“Unfortunately, countless spinoffs, sequels and universes in both big screen and small screen iterations, and an at times unclear marketing message have resulted in mixed critical and fan reaction and thus resulted in disappointing box office results for some of Marvel’s recent big screen offerings,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNBC.
Those comments appeared to be similar to what Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro had speculated regarding the film’s low performance.
“Marvel Studios, “The Marvels” — with its crossover streaming series blah-blah — looks like it was built to be seen in homes, not to get audiences off the couch,” he wrote.
“Marvel, let’s go back to the Netflix days, when Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Punisher lived in homes and not on the big screen,” he wrote. “It’s clearly better for business.”
However, as CNBC pointed out, certain big-screen offers that aren’t directly related to small-screen programs haven’t fared well.
“While shows like ‘Loki,’ ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Moon Knight’ scored well with critics and general viewers, ‘Secret Invasion’ flopped,” the outlet noted.
“Similarly, on the theatrical side, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ ‘Guardians 3’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ won over audiences, while ‘Eternals,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ made them question the direction of the franchise.”
Even with its terrible performance, “The Marvels” remained the top film at the box office this weekend, beating out the horror flick “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which is expected to gross around $9 million in its third weekend.
Corporate globalist media will not create what people want to watch because it is about control, diversion, and manipulation, not enjoyment.
