Every American officer is required to take an oath of office upon their appointment, swearing to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The American oaths of office are different from those of many nations around the world, particularly because we do not swear allegiance to a person, a religious sect, or even to the nation’s citizens. America’s leaders instead swear to protect the Constitution, making a pledge to protect the freedoms that make this unique.

Now, a group of retired officers have come forward to express their views about those who are in contempt of these promises. Air Force Major General Bentley Rayburn and for-star Army General Jack Keane have both spoken out against Obama’s treatment of Islamic terrorists, specifically citing his trade of several Guantanamo Bay detainees for Bowe Bergdahl.

Other leaders, like U.S. Army Major General Paul E. Vallely has argued that America’s leadership has “so damaged individual American liberty that it can be restored only by citizen protests” that force the resignations of the political leaders who have been most instrumental in the destruction. He, and many others, have called for a “citizen’s council” to address these issues.

These comments are coming from people with experience, and should not be disregarded.
