Car dealers and manufacturers are urgently attempting a variety of strategies to persuade customers to purchase a new electric vehicle rather than a gas-powered vehicle, but declining sales indicate that purchasers are not biting.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the biggest issue that vehicle dealers have encountered is that early adopters are nearly finished purchasing EVs.
Early adopters are people who are enthusiastic about new technology and will join in regardless of the expense. These are the same folks who spent $20,000 for the first flat-screen televisions or $2,000 for the first VCRs. These folks are often rich and like being the “first” to purchase something new and improved.
However, the number of early adopters is limited.
Manufacturers typically rely on early adopters to fund research and development and to assist them in making items more affordable so that the general public may join the early adopters by purchasing a product.
Unfortunately, this has not been beneficial to the automobile sector.
Instead, vehicle dealers are employing a variety of price-cutting strategies to entice more consumers to purchase an EV.
However, it is not working. EVs are stacking up in vehicle dealerships around the country, unsold. While it is evident that early adopters are pleased, the average car-buying American does not appear to want an electric vehicle.
As a result, significant discounts are already sweeping dealerships as auto sellers scramble to unload EVs. According to Insider, some discounts are as high as $4,991, making this the first time EV sales have witnessed such a high discount rate.
However, with list prices of $50,000 and above, the cost of a new EV is just too exorbitant for most Americans, who are already dealing with high-interest rates on loans and rampant inflation that makes their money worth less.
EVs are currently experiencing considerably more discounts, specials, and low-cost leasing options than gas automobiles.
According to the Wall Street Journal, despite the savings, individual EVs are taking significantly longer to reach customers. It took more than two months to sell one EV in September. In comparison, a gas automobile takes less than a month, and a hybrid takes three weeks.
This is directly affecting dealers’ pockets. Many dealers take out millions of dollars in loans each year to purchase automobiles from manufacturers. And if these vehicles remain unsold for months, dealers will incur significant loan payments.
Manufacturers aren’t faring any better, having pushed up the development of auto factories and battery facilities in anticipation of a large demand for electric vehicles—a demand that never materialized.
Many of these manufacturers, including Ford, Hyundai, and General Motors, are already pushing plans to build new facilities in the future rather than going all-in now, as they had anticipated.
Tesla has dropped pricing, decreasing expenditures for new customers by approximately a third. This pushed the rest of the business to decrease their pricing as well. However, these pressures are fake, not real, and cannot be sustained when dealers and manufacturers are losing money on every EV sale when compared to the cost of manufacturing the cars.
Dealers are also providing enticing leasing arrangements to entice customers to purchase an EV.
Volkswagen, for example, is providing a no-money-down lease on the ID.4 EV. And others are providing comparable discounts.
In reality, leasing transactions have risen to account for a sizable portion of EV sales. According to the Wall Street Journal, EV leasing transactions now account for the bulk of EV sales, compared to barely 30% of the whole new car market. Volkswagen even claims that leasing accounts for 80 percent of ID.4 sales.
Still, EVs aren’t leaping off the shelves as Joe Biden and his woke carmakers predicted.
What is evident is that most Americans prefer gas-powered automobiles that are less expensive and more dependable than EVs.
Attempting to impose these undesired vehicles on us all from on high will not change this truth.
