Yesterday, Americans celebrated Veterans Day and paid tribute to those who have kept us safe for so many years.
It’s without a doubt one of the most important holidays on the American calendar.
Sadly, the brave men and women serving in Afghanistan suffered a terrible tragedy hours later.
2 members of the military and 2 military contractors were killed in Afghanistan this morning.
From The Week:
A suicide attack claimed by the Taliban killed four people and injured 17 more Saturday at Bagram Airfield, a large U.S. base central to NATO operations in Afghanistan. The identities of the dead have not been released, nor has the identity of the bomber.
Update 10:55 a.m.: Defense Secretary Ash Carter said those killed were all Americans, two service members and two contractors, and that the injured included 16 Americans and one Polish soldier. It is still unknown how the bomber got into the base.
A lot of people forget that Americans are still in harm’s way every single day over in the Middle East.
Here’s more.
From BBC News:
A local government spokesman said the attacker had entered the base early in the morning and was among Afghan labourers reporting for duty when he detonated his vest.
Mr Carter said he was “deeply saddened” by the US casualties and promised an investigation.
“Force protection is always a top priority for us in Afghanistan, and we will investigate this tragedy to determine any steps we can take to improve it,” he said.
President Obama likes to pretend that he has ended the wars over there but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, you can make the argument he has made the situation a lot worse.
