One of the most renowned culinary countries in Europe has turned down a “novel” addition to its menu: beef and other items referred to as “cultivated” or “lab-grown.”
“Italy is the world’s first country safe from the social and economic risks of synthetic food,” Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida told the BBC last week.
“In defense of health, of the Italian production system, of thousands of jobs, of our culture and tradition, with the law approved today, Italy is the first nation in the world to be safe from the social and economic risks of synthetic food,” he said in a Facebook post on November 16, as translated by the New York Post.
“The country’s Chamber of Deputies approved the bill 159 for to 53 against, confirming an earlier passage of the bill in the Italian Senate,” the Washington Examiner reported Saturday.
Penalties for breaking the legislation may reach 60,000 euros, or around $65,500 in today’s currency. (Notably, some publications suggested potentially larger fines.)
The Examiner reports that the new rule forbids the “use, sale, import, and export of lab-grown food,” but it may put the European Union in hot water because it hasn’t taken any action on what it refers to as “novel foods.”
Italy’s new law may face legal challenges from the European Commission if the EU decides to legalize lab-grown meat.
“In Europe, we do not have such products yet on the market… because they are considered by regulators, the European Commission and member states as a novel food and that requires a safety assessment by Efsa, authorisation by member states and the European Commission,” Wolfgang Gelbmann of the European Food Safety Authority said in September, according to the BBC.
Environmental groups claim that the manufacturing of lab-grown meat releases less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, while animal rights organizations typically support lab-grown meat as being more compassionate to animals, according to the BBC.
Opponents of the new law pointed out that so-called “synthetic meat” is not “synthetic” at all because “cultivated meat” is produced from natural cells grown without the use of any kind of genetic modification.
However, the meat processing industry in Italy handles about $10 billion worth of meat a year, and proponents of the law stated that they were concerned about safeguarding those workers, according to the Post.
The head of Coldiretti, the largest farmers’ organization in Italy, stated that allowing lab-grown beef will help big businesses at the expense of regional farmers.
“We are proud to be the first country that, despite being in favor of research, prevents, as a precautionary measure, the sale of laboratory-produced food whose effects it could have on the health of citizens consumers are currently unknown,” he wrote on Facebook.
Additionally, the measure prohibits the use of terms associated with meat to promote plant-based substitutes, such as “tofu steak.”
The Post reports that Singapore and the United States have authorized the consumption of farmed beef.
Good for Italy! It is trying to protect its citizens instead of enslaving them. I wish America were so protective of its citizens and would refuse to consider making such unnatural things as fake meat and bug additives legal.
