Kim Glass, 37, a former Olympic volleyball player suffered terrible injuries after she was attacked and brutally beaten by a homeless man in downtown Los Angeles during the weekend.
In a series of videos, posted on her Instagram Stories, Glass detailed the incident. In the video, Glass has a visibly injured face, with stitches above one eye that is swollen shut, and a bleeding gash on her nose.
The athlete claimed that while leaving lunch with a friend, a homeless man threw a metal object at her, striking her in the face.
“As I was leaving lunch, I was outside, and I was saying goodbye to a friend,” Glass said, “This homeless man ran up, he had something in his hand… he just looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes. And, as I turned to go tell my friend, ‘I think something’s, like, wrong with him and I think he’s going to hit a car,’ before I knew it, a big metal bolt, like pipe, hit me right here.”
“It just happened so fast,” she continues. “He literally flung it from the street so he was not even close to me at all. Kinda took me down and out.”
According to Glass, a group of strangers came to help her, as well as restrain the suspect until police arrived. The suspected assailant was detained, arrested, and held in a prison without bail on charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon.
Glass sustained a severe eye wound. Fortunately, her vision is not expected to be affected permanently by the incident.
“Right now, it looks like my vision will be OK, and I got some really great stitching from a doctor,” she said.
Glass won a silver medal for the US Olympic volleyball team during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She is well-known amongst Olympic volleyball fans.
