SEVERE WARNING! The Keurig Cups Are KILLING YOU!

Coffee lovers everywhere know the all too familiar cravings that can be triggered by the slightest little things. Feeling tired or a hint of fresh brewed coffee in the air are just two of the many things that can set the mind racing towards getting your hands on a cup of the good stuff. There have been many advances in coffee brewing technology in recent years that even allow you to enjoy coffeehouse-style coffee right in the comfort of our own homes, but we may want to pump the brakes on our enthusiasm for these new products. According to Healthy Holistic Living, the popular K Cups and the machines they are used in could be bacteria farms.

There are warnings floating around about the things that may be floating through machines like the Keurig, no matter how carefully they are cleaned. The rubber tubing and the internal tank can be mold-magnets, and make for an easy environment for biofilm to thrive. Most people will write this off with something along the lines of ‘the high temperature of the brewing process kills the germs,’ or ‘the coffee beans kill bacteria,’ but Donna Duberg, M.A., M.S., an assistant professor of clinical laboratory science at Saint Louis University is warning that’s simply not enough.

“There is research which shows that it is only about 50 percent effective in killing bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans, and molds,” she warns.
