There is a lot going on in the world today to keep up with lately.
Over the last few months, our eyes have been diverted to Ukraine and Russia, to election fraud, and then to China and Taiwan too.
However, the threat of war with Russia is on everyone’s mind especially after, hosts on Russian state TV said that Vladimir Putin could “destroy the whole east coast of the US” with just two missiles.
You can watch the clip here:
Since Russia’s invasion on February 24, the West has tried to make Russia pay financially for its war. Though going after Russia’s profitable energy sector was seen as a last resort in Europe.
It has also been the hardest thing to do, since the bloc gets 25% of its oil and 40% of its natural gas from Russia. European countries that depend on Russia even more have been especially slow to take action.
Just a few months ago, it would have been unthinkable for EU leaders to agree to cut 90% of all oil imports from Russia over the next six months. But they did just that on Monday night.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called the embargo a “big step forward,” and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin called it “a watershed moment.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “The sanctions have one clear goal: to get Russia to stop this war, pull out its troops, and agree with Ukraine on a sensible and fair peace.” Ukraine thought that Russia would have to pay tens of billions of dollars because of the ban.
