Next week, residents of one Connecticut town will head to the polls to vote in a mayoral election after the Democratic primary results were nullified on Wednesday.

After footage surfaced of a person who claimed to have supported Democratic Mayor Joe Ganim placing several votes in an absentee ballot drop box on September 12 in Bridgeport, Superior Court Judge William Clark voided the results of the primary.

According to WNPR-FM in Connecticut, Ganim won the election by a margin of 251 votes, beating out his opponent, John Gomes, despite coming in second place in the in-person vote.

“The volume of ballots so mishandled is such that it calls the result of the primary election into serious doubt and leaves the court unable to determine the legitimate result of the primary,” Clark said in his ruling.

The results, he wrote, “are shocking to the court and should be shocking to all the parties.”

The only people who are allowed to deposit absentee ballots in Connecticut are the voter or the voter’s designated agent.

Gomes filed a lawsuit to have the primary election results overturned, and the matter went to trial.

“At the end of the day, the videos don’t lie,” said lawyer Bill Bloss, who represented Gomes.

“The videos showed substantial, massive absentee ballot misconduct,” he said. “And that was certainly a substantial reason why the judge ruled the way he did, I think.”

“This is a victory for the people of Bridgeport,” Gomes said, according to The Associated Press. “Our campaign always believed that the integrity of our democratic process must be upheld, and Superior Court Judge William Clark agreed.”

The judge has no authority to halt an election, so voting is still set for Tuesday, according to the Hartford Courant.

“The result of next week’s general election will determine what happens next,” the outlet reported. “If Gomes wins, his attorney William Bloss said, he would withdraw the complaint, and Gomes would be mayor. If Ganim wins Tuesday’s election, another Democratic primary will take place, according to Clark’s order.”

Ganim is a Democratic candidate, whereas Gomes is a non-affiliated independent. Republican David Herz and petition candidate Lamond Daniels also appear on the ballot.

There is no new main date planned at this time.

According to WNPR, Clark has mandated that all interested parties convene with election authorities within 10 days to discuss the next steps.

Ganim urged his backers to vote in the next election.

“Let’s send a powerful message that we want to keep the progress going in Bridgeport,” he said.

According to Only in Bridgeport, Clark will be joining the bench in 2021 after being nominated by Democratic Governor Ned Lamont.
